Harley raffle raises money for New Town promotion

New Town stands on the verge of a great introduction to the world, thanks to the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. But getting ready for the event could cost more than the city can afford.

That’s why the New Town Chamber of Commerce organized a raffle of another great American tradition, a 100th Anniversary Heritage Softail Harley Davidson. Organizers felt that tying the accomplishments of two inventors 100 years ago to the accomplishments of two explorers 200 years ago would be a good marketing fit.

The Van Hook/Traynor Park Improvement Association stepped up to help the Chamber. The Association has a raffle permit with the state so the raffle is being run under the Association’s permit. The group’s gaming director Vickie Simonson is overseeing the legal and accounting details of the raffle.

The first raffle tickets were sold last week by a handful of New Town Chamber members.

Ardell Horob said he had sold almost an entire book without trying in just three days.

This week, other Chamber members are getting raffle tickets to sell. Posters identify merchants who have tickets.

The raffle runs until June 21 when the motorcycle and the other top three prizes will be given away during the Four Bears Casino and Lodge Fun Run concert.

If all 2,000 of the $20 tickets are sold, $40,000 could be raised. However, not all that will be available for promoting New Town. First the motorcycle will be paid for. The $20,000 motorcycle is from Dakota Harley Davidson in Minot. The Heritage Softail is a collector’s edition with anniversary paint and logo. It is often considered the style of motorcycle most identified as a Harley Davidson.

After it is paid for and other expenses are deducted, the Chamber hopes to have $15,000 to $20,000 promote the city during the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial.

Signage, advertising and visitor information services are some of the key areas the Chamber identified as needing attention, but couldn’t afford without the fundraiser.

Some of the places to buy the raffle tickets include Four Bears Casino, New Town News,
Kennbecks Jack and Jill, DJ’s Consulting,
True Value Hardware, Bratvold’s Variety,
Cenex and the Cenex General Store, the Sunset Motel and the West Dakota Inn.
